JAB Member Corrales Wins
WBC Lightweight Title May 9, 2005 On Saturday night, Joint Association of Boxers (JAB) member Diego Corrales (40-2-0, 33 KOs) won the World Boxing Council (WBC) Lightweight Title. Corrales, who already held—and successfully defended—the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Lightweight Title, defeated Jose Luis Castillo (52-7-1, 46 KOs) at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Castillo knocked down Corrales twice in the 10th round of the fight, but Corrales regained his footing and won in that same round by technical knockout. “We want to congratulate Diego Corrales on his new WBC title, as well as on his successful defense of his WBO title,” said Teamsters President Jim Hoffa. “He showed incredible toughness over the course of the fight.” JAB is affiliated with the Teamsters Union, which is providing financial support and organizing expertise while the boxers’ union continues to grow. “We’re very proud of Diego,” said JAB President Eddie Mustafa Muhammad. “He’s a true champion and a serious fighter—both in the ring and for the rights of his fellow boxers.”
