JAB President Addresses SEIU National African American Caucus

April 18, 2005

On April 12, Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, Joint Association of Boxers (JAB) President, addressed the National African American Caucus of the Service Employees International Union (AFRAM-SEIU). AFRAM-SEIU President Marchel Smiley invited Muhammad to speak to the group about JAB’s current organizing effort and JAB’s effort to secure a presidential pardon for Jack Johnson.

“Jack Johnson was a great boxer and deserves the utmost respect,” Muhammad said. “This effort to get him a pardon is all about getting him that respect, even after all these years. It’s time for justice.”

Muhammad said the opportunity to speak fit well with the theme of the AFRAM-SEIU conference: “Social and Economic Justice … From Theory to Practice.”

“JAB has been working hard to bring social and economic justice to professional boxers,” Muhammad said. “We’re working on behalf of these fighters, and for a larger social issue that needs to be addressed. That’s the message I wanted to get out to the caucus.”
