Boxing Insider: Fight Fixing Another Example of Need for Regulation

January 12, 2004

Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, Founder of the Joint Association of Boxers, issued the following statement in response to the article appearing in last Friday's New York Daily News:

I have received calls from fighters all over the country on the allegations concerning fight fixing involving Top Rank. These fighters are upset. They are concerned that even if untrue, these and other allegations which plague our sport are destroying its credibility and alienating our fans.

This is just one more example of how the sport of boxing needs to regulate itself. A central component of a new regulatory structure should be a boxer's union to protect boxers from underhanded practices.

That is why boxers need to join JAB. Together, united in a Boxers' Union, with the backing of the Teamsters, and working with our supporters in Congress, we can put an end to the shenanigans that are killing the sport we love.
