Statement of Ron Lyle,
Former Heavyweight Fighter
and Boxing Legend

April 6, 2005

During my career as a professional boxer, I faced my share of tough fights, and I know how important respect is, both in and out of the boxing ring. I would like to offer my thanks to the members of Congress who have supported the resolution calling for a Presidential pardon of Jack Johnson—it is time for him to receive a pardon so he can receive the respect he is long past due.

I would also like to thank the Joint Association of Boxers for their efforts on Jack Johnson’s behalf, as well. I wish I could be there in person today, but was unable to attend the event because of a prior commitment. However, I felt it was extremely important to add my voice to those of others in the boxing community who are united on this front.

Thank you.
